What connects them
The Braamfontein Spruit runs through most of this page
Seven of these nine suburbs sit on or beside one continuous greenbelt, and a surprising share of the practice’s sports caseload comes off it.
The Spruit follows the watercourse north from Emmarentia through Parkhurst and Craighall Park into Delta Park, and on towards Randburg, Bryanston and Rivonia. Estimates of its full length vary by which sections are counted — the mapped trail network is usually put somewhere between thirty and sixty kilometres — but the part that matters here is the ten or so kilometres that pass through these suburbs.
It is dirt, grass, gravel and granite rather than tar, which is why it is both the best training ground in the northern suburbs and a steady source of ankle sprains, Achilles tendinopathy, patellofemoral knee pain and lower back complaints in cyclists. Uneven ground demands far more from the foot, calf and hip than a road does, and it exposes any weakness in that chain very efficiently.
Two practical notes. The trail runs its best surface after the summer rains and its worst immediately after them, so injury patterns shift with the season. And the running community’s standing advice about the more isolated stretches — go in a group, stay on the busier sections, daylight only — is sound, and worth taking.
