Linden is one of the oldest suburbs in Johannesburg — farmland until the gold rush, established as a suburb in 1901, and only absorbed into the city in 1937. It is also the largest area on this list at just over four square kilometres, bordering Northcliff, Blairgowrie, Victory Park, Greenside and Cresta.
For decades it was a settled, largely Afrikaans suburb, and a meaningful share of residents have lived in the same house for thirty or forty years.
