Physiotherapy near Emmarentia

The dam and its running and walking routes make this the most active catchment the practice sees. Runners building for a race, parkrun regulars and dog walkers with the ankle rolls to prove it — plus the cyclists who use the same roads early on a Sunday.

Worth knowing

Emmarentia, in more detail

Emmarentia Dam and the Johannesburg Botanical Garden sit side by side here, and the loop around them is one of the most-run circuits in the city — roughly three and a half kilometres of mixed surface, which people repeat rather than lengthen. The garden holds tens of thousands of trees and a very large rose garden, and the Melville Koppies ridge rises immediately to the south, so hill work is available to anyone who wants it and unavoidable for anyone who does not.

The dam itself is a working sports venue: Dabulamanzi Canoe Club and the Emmarentia Sailing Club both operate on the water. Paddling injuries are their own category — shoulders, wrists and thoracic spines rather than knees — and they respond well to a proper assessment of how the load is being shared between the shoulder blade and the arm.

Marks Park Sports Club on Judith Road has been in the suburb since 1938 and fields cricket, rugby, soccer, baseball, tennis, archery and martial arts across its grounds. Club and school sport at that volume produces the whole spread of contact and overuse injury, in adults and in teenagers, and it is a large part of why sports rehabilitation is the core of this practice rather than a sideline.

One spelling note, because it costs people appointments: the suburb is Emmarentia, with an “a”. It is very often typed “Emmerentia”, and the dam, the garden and the suburb are all spelled the same way.

Questions from Emmarentia patients

Both are possible. The rooms are on 7th Avenue in Parktown North, and plenty of Emmarentia patients come in for the full range of equipment and Clinical Pilates. If travelling is difficult — after surgery, or simply because the car is the hardest part of the day — Rikki treats at home in Emmarentia too, with the same assessment and the same plan.

Emmarentia, with an “a”. The suburb, the dam and the Johannesburg Botanical Garden alongside it all use that spelling. The “Emmerentia” version is common enough that it is worth mentioning, but it will not find you much.
