Built on a ridge, which is relevant: stairs and steep driveways are part of daily life here, and they are exactly what a recovering knee or hip has to be rebuilt for. Home visits make particular sense in Westcliff for that reason.

Worth knowing
Westcliff was established in 1905 on the ridge above the city, and the topography has shaped it ever since. Large houses on steep stands, long stepped driveways, and roads that switch back up the hill. The everyday physical demand of living here is genuinely higher than in the flatter suburbs a few minutes north, and it is unforgiving of a knee, a hip or a back that is not up to strength.
The Westcliff stairs on Crescent Drive are the clearest example. A public right of way climbing the full height of the ridge in several long flights, open from early morning until evening, and used daily by runners and dog walkers as a training climb. They are excellent conditioning and a reliable source of patellofemoral knee pain, Achilles complaints and calf strains — particularly on the way down, which is where most of the damage is actually done.
The other thing that matters about Westcliff is what it sits next to. Several of Johannesburg’s major private hospitals are within a few minutes — among them Netcare Rosebank, the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre and Netcare Milpark. A great deal of orthopaedic surgery in this part of the city happens there, and the rehabilitation afterwards has to happen somewhere close enough to actually attend twice a week.
For the first few weeks after that surgery, when driving is not yet allowed and the driveway is a hill, a home visit is usually the difference between a rehabilitation programme that happens and one that does not.

Both are possible. The rooms are on 7th Avenue in Parktown North, and plenty of Westcliff patients come in for the full range of equipment and Clinical Pilates. If travelling is difficult — after surgery, or simply because the car is the hardest part of the day — Rikki treats at home in Westcliff too, with the same assessment and the same plan.
