Worth knowing

Victory Park, in more detail

Victory Park was laid out in January 1919 and named for the Allied victory in the First World War. It is compact — about a square and a half kilometre — and it borders Delta Park, Craighall Park, Parkhurst, Greenside, Emmarentia and Linden, which is to say almost every other suburb on this page.

Delta Park is the reason it matters here. Over a hundred hectares of grassland and woodland with three dams, the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary and a circular walk of roughly five kilometres, it is the largest piece of open ground in this part of Johannesburg and the venue for Delta parkrun every Saturday. The Braamfontein Spruit runs through it and continues north, so Delta Park is effectively the junction of the whole greenbelt.

The housing stock is large older homes, many with high ceilings, parquet floors and a full flight of stairs. That combination matters after a hip or knee replacement: the rehabilitation target is not “walking”, it is that specific staircase, and it is a much better use of a session to work on it in the house than to approximate it at the rooms. Home visits in Victory Park are common for exactly that reason.

It remains a family suburb with a strong school-sport culture, so a good share of the Victory Park caseload is fourteen-year-olds with growth-related knee and heel pain, hockey ankles and rugby shoulders — injuries that are usually straightforward, and are made complicated by being played through.

Questions from Victory Park patients

Both are possible. The rooms are on 7th Avenue in Parktown North, and plenty of Victory Park patients come in for the full range of equipment and Clinical Pilates. If travelling is difficult — after surgery, or simply because the car is the hardest part of the day — Rikki treats at home in Victory Park too, with the same assessment and the same plan.

Yes. Victory Park is inside the home-visit ring, so if getting to the rooms straight after a game or practice is not practical, the same assessment and the same plan happen at your house instead.
