Physiotherapy near Parkhurst

The next suburb over, and one of the practice’s busiest. A lot of Parkhurst patients work from home or from the 4th Avenue offices and studios, and arrive with the neck, shoulder and upper back pain that a laptop on a dining table produces within about a year.

Worth knowing

Parkhurst, in more detail

Parkhurst was registered in 1904 as Johannesburg’s sixty-seventh suburb, and the housing stock still shows it: small restored cottages on narrow stands, on streets too tight for the trees planted along them. It was one of the first suburbs in the city to put tables out on the pavement, and 4th Avenue has been the social spine ever since — which means a lot of people here both work and eat within walking distance of their front door.

That walkability is genuinely good for backs and genuinely bad for feet and ankles. Cambered pavements, tree roots and kerbs account for a steady trickle of rolled ankles and plantar heel pain, usually in people who insist they were not doing anything at the time.

The Braamfontein Spruit runs along the western edge of the suburb, through Roosevelt and Keith Fleming parks, before continuing north towards Delta Park. Parkhurst runners and mountain bikers use it daily, and it supplies the other half of the caseload: Achilles and calf complaints, runner’s knee, and lower back pain that only shows up on the longer rides.

The suburb also sits close to Parkhurst Primary, Kingsmead College and Roedean, so school-sport injuries in teenagers — hockey, netball, athletics — are a regular part of a Parkhurst week during term.
